Three New Island Airports Planned

Within a month the construction of three new airports in Korea was announced. All of them have in common that they are going to be built on islands. A large airport will be built on Jeju-do and two smaller airports on Ulleung-do and Heuksan-do.

Airports on Ulleung-do and Heuksan-d0

The runway is going to be 1200m long and 30m wide. Air planes carrying up to 50 passengers will be able to land there. The airport on Ulleung-do will cost 580.5 billion KRW and the airport on Heuksan-do will cost 183.5 billion KRW. The small airport on Ulleung-do will be completed in 2021 and the airport on Heuksan-do will be ready by 2020.

It’s the first time that Korea builds such small airports for civil use.

 

 

Second Airport on Jeju-do

On November 10th it was announced that a new airport will be built on Jeju-do. The second airport on Jeju-do will be in the eastern part of the island. It won’t disturb the flight operation at the current airport. The reason for the new airport is that island has a steep increase of tourists from China. The current airport is going to reach saturation in 2018 but the amount of expected tourists is going to increase further.

There will be only one runway, 3200m long and 60m wide. The construction cost are estimated to be 4.1 trillion KRW. The new Jeju-do airport will open in 2025.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to have 25 million passengers at the new airport, while the current Jeju Airport should handle 20 million passengers (numbers are calculated for the year 2035). It means that the new airport is going to become the main transport hub for tourists on the island.
